MV Titanium™

The world’s first medium voltage, speed-controlled motor concept that helps facilitate a low carbon future.

power of innovation

MV Titanium™ revolutionizes how electricity is converted into motion. ABB is the first to offer a medium voltage motor where speed control is brought right next to the process. The simplicity of the installation is groundbreaking: a compact motor and speed control solution that doesn’t require an electrical room. This eliminates the need for long cabling runs, enabling significant installation savings. It is an ideal solution for pumps, fans and compressors.

The concept brings engineering and installation cost down, while providing the energy savings of a traditional drive and motor setup.

With MV Titanium™ less is more:

 • Less complexity. More control.
 • Less cost. More productivity.
 • Less CO₂ emission. More energy efficiency.

Key benefits

No need for an electrical room

Typically a drive is installed into an electrical room. With MV Titanium the speed control is inbuilt and there is no need for an electrical room.

Energy and CO2 savings

For example compared to throttling (valve) control even over 50% savings can be achieved with MV Titanium™ in pump applications.

No need for a transformer

MV Titanium™ can be connected to medium voltage distribution network without a transformer.

Less cabling

Existing medium voltage supply cables can be used. With the in-build speed control, there is no need for long cables between the motor and the electrical room.

Robust design

To ensure long equipment lifetime, speed control and its control electronics are housed in a clean, cooled, safe and non-vibrating space.

Simplicity

Standard motor foundation can be used. This together with the transformerless solution, which doesn't require space in the electrical room greatly simplifies the installation.

Future-proof digital and automation integratrion

By 2030, existing technologies will drive most CO₂ emissions reductions, but by 2050, nearly half will stem from innovations yet to come. This new concept helps us achieve those 2050 targets.

The current installed base of medium-voltage direct on-line motors (DOL) is around 1,000,000. We estimate that half of the estimated installations between 2024 and 2027 will still be direct online motors. It is crucial to change the installed base to be more energy efficient in our fight against climate change.

Separate larger motor and drive systems have been offered for more than 40 years. But we have noticed that there are challenges associated with these separate systems (cost, efficiency, and the facilities needed). These challenges tend to lead end users to choose direct online motors instead of more efficient speed-controlled motors.

MV Titanium will remove most of these barriers and with this offering, a speed-controlled option is now even more attractive to our customers.

MV Titanium’s energy savings and CO2 in a pump application compared to

 • Throttling/valve control up to 54%
 • On/Off control up to 42%
 • Hydraulic control up to 17%

and in fan applications compared to

 • Outlet damper up to 66%
 • No control flow up to 63%
 • Inlet box damper up to 45%
 • Cycling (on/off) up to43%
 • Slip coupling up to 22%
