Millmate Strip Scanner Edge Position Sensor (PMSG12x)

The Millmate Strip Scanner Edge Position Sensor is a brilliant solution to the problem of determining strip edge position during the rolling and post-treatment of metal strip. Satisfactory metal strip measurement and control of the edge position can lead to a significant improvement in production economy.

Overview

The Millmate Strip Scanner Edge Position Sensor is a complete unit, enclosed in corrosion-resistant aluminium-bronze. In the edge sensor there are a number of electrical coils and certain circuits for signal processing. The interior of the edge position sensor is well protected by the rugged case and tight-fitting cover. The sensor can easily withstand dirt, liquids and a corrosive environment. Metal strip measurement is not influenced in any way by mill coolants. The immunity means that the edge sensor can be placed very close to or even inside the mill stand. However, there must be a metal-free zone above the edge sensor.

Application

The fundamental requirement for measuring strip edge position with the Millmate Strip Scanner System is that the edge of the strip runs over the active measuring area of the edge sensor.

One edge sensor is required for each strip edge. The sensor is mounted in the cross line of the strip and ideally, the top of the sensor should be parallel to the surface of the strip.

Metal-free zone above edge sensor.

There must be a metal-free zone above the edge sensor. Of course, this does not apply to the strip itself, which should run close to the edge sensor. For full accuracy at maximum measurement distance there must not be any metal objects in the metal-free zone.

Best measurement results

An outstanding measurement result will be obtained if the following points are borne in mind when installing the system:

 • No metal objects in the metal-free zone above the edge sensor other than the strip itself.
 • Edge sensor to be protected from severe impacts from the end of the strip.
 • Strip to pass close to the edge sensor at smallest possible distance, 20–40 mm recommended.

Measurement technology

A Millmate Strip Scanner Edge Sensor operates with weak pulsating electromagnetic fields, generated by a number of electrical coils in the edge sensor. ABB’s patented Pulsed Eddy Current (PEC) technology makes it possible to measure accurately despite variations in material, environment conditions and measurement distance such as wavy edges and strip lift-off. Three coils are used simultaneously. The partly covered coil at the strip edge measures a combination of strip distance and edge position. Together with the distance measurement of the two other coils a true edge position can be calculated, independent of material and distance. In order to make measurement range wide enough, a number of measuring coils are arranged in line in the edge sensor. The relevant coils are automatically selected by the system itself. PEC technology measurement phases:

Phase 1: Transmitting

An electromagnetic field is generated with the coils transmitting. The field “energy” is stored in the air gap and in the strip.

Phase 2: Position measurement

Fast air gap response just after transmit field is switched off. The measurement of air gap energy corresponds to strip edge position and to distance between coil and strip.

Phase 3: Material compensation

The material dependent response from the surface area of the strip begins when the transmit field is switched off. The material signal measurement starts when the air gap signal has declined. The material signal is used to compensate for the surface response during the position measurement, giving true material independent position measurement.
