Thickness Gauging Systems

There are two main types of thickness gauging systems: the Box Gauge for measuring on aluminium and clad aluminium strip, and the C-frame Gauge for measuring on any non-ferrous strip and foil.

Overview

ABB's Standard C-frame Gauge and Box Gauge provide fast, non-contact thickness measurement with proven accuracy and durability. Designed for integration into demanding rolling environments, they deliver high-resolution data that enables closed-loop control and consistent product performance. This helps manufacturers reduce waste, lower energy intensity, and meet rising expectations for efficiency and sustainability without compromising yield.

Benefits

Pulsed Eddy Current technology

ABB’s Pulsed Eddy Current (PEC) is a completely safe technology that makes the measurement of dimensions and material properties with exceptional accuracy possible.

Contact-free measurement

Robust non-contact design ensures high availability, hassle-free operation and consistent long-term performance.

Material independence

The system can measure any non-ferrous material or alloy without additional calibration after initial setup.

Robust design

Housed in an aluminum-bronze casing, MTG offers dependable operation in demanding industrial settings. It has no fragile parts, ensuring superior long-term stability.

Calibration

Only a few certified site calibration plates are needed to verify the system to cover the complete measuring range.

Customer cases and news

Stretching the limits of measurement

In a cold rolling mill, measuring and controlling the thickness of aluminum metal strip is as important as it gets. ABB’s Millmate thickness gauging (MTG) system does this accurately, dependably and safely.
