The high-performance, high-quality welding solution

ABB’s Friction Stir Welding Functional Module is an all-in-one solution delivering precise, high-strength, defect-free welds with no emissions of toxic fumes or sparks, making it safer for workers and better for the environment.

Combining a high-performance friction stir welding (FSW) head, IRB 7720 with OmniCore V400XT, DressPack, force control, and dedicated application software, it can be quickly and easily integrated into manufacturing lines, making it an ideal alternative to expensive and bulky CNC FSW machines.

Welding speeds reach up to 3 m/min, three times faster than arc welding.

Key benefits

Consistent weld quality

Precise and accurate performance ensures strong joints without cracks and porosity. Low heat input – less distortion and residual stress. Consistent performance and quality reduces the need for additional rework, saving time and costs.

Flexibility in a small footprint

50-70% space saving compared to CNC. Able to weld 3D shapes and use positioners. Robot cells can be rapidly added or reconfigured, supporting evolving production needs.

Cost-effective

50-70% cheaper than CNC. One supplier, service and spare parts for whole line. No additional programming and maintenance training.

Simple integration

Pre-engineered function module. RAPID routines and FlexPendant interface speed up comissioning and operator training. Force-controlled path compensation.

Technical data

Max Z-direction force 12 kN
