Evolve, enhance and expand with Symphony® Plus SDe Series
Legacy automation systems present extreme challenges for industrial plant managers resulting in decreased efficiency, unplanned maintenance costs, and an increased risk of compliance issues. However, upgrading the hardware of these decades old systems to meet today’s standards involves a costly and disruptive "rip and replace" approach. By adopting a stepwise evolution approach, using planned, phased upgrades that preserve existing infrastructure, ABB’s new Symphony® Plus SDe Series Control and I/O products, address these challenges. The utilization of a phased approach enables sustainable, cost-efficient, modular upgrades, ensuring safe, secure and reliable operations throughout the automation system modernization process - 01.

01 - In addition to power and water industries, ABB Ability™ Symphony® Plus systems are used to upgrade installed control systems in the oil & gas, pharmaceuticals and pulp & paper industries.
A Smarter Path to Automation Evolution
Instead of ripping out legacy systems and installing entirely new hardware and cabinet infrastructure, SDe Series products offer a space-fit, pluggable approach which enables stepwise, in-place upgrades that minimize risk and disruption to process operations - 02.
By retaining key infrastructure such as existing cabinets, field wiring, termination units, and cabling, the SDe Series helps owner operators keep production on schedule while evolving systems with minimal downtime. And because components can be swapped within existing physical spaces, sustainability is improved by reducing waste. In addition, the use of newer technology reduces energy consumption while replacing only value - add components lowers overall costs and provides increased functionality
This is innovation with continuity: low disruption, high flexibility, and a smarter way to modernize.

Stepwise Evolution
The ability to upgrade older automation systems across industries is key to future-proofing plant operations and investments. Recognizing the need to innovate through continuity, ABB has purpose-built SDe Series hardware to extend the life of ABB Ability™ Symphony® Harmony and all predecessor systems. With flexible options to evolve, enhance and expand ABB Harmony, Symphony DIN (SD) and INFI 90 systems - which are currently installed in over 7,000 sites globally - the SDe (and SDev) Series helps owner operators reduce risks and lower ownership costs while modernizing their control installations regardless of the system architecture. These include replacement of individual Harmony rack modules, Evolution Harmony rack module mounting units (MMU) and upgrading DIN-Rail mounting bases.
SDe modules embedded within SDev module assemblies allow incremental, module-by-module replacement and upgrades of Harmony rack modules. Additionally, SDe modules mounted in Evolution Mounting Chassis (EMC) enable stepwise, controller-by-controller replacement of Harmony rack modules - 03. Since the EMC is a space-fit functional replacement for Harmony MMUs, all I/O cables and field wiring remain undisturbed. By preserving both hard assets (system infrastructure, cabling and wiring) and soft assets (the Intellectual Property associated with the customer’s control logic), SDe Series Control and I/O modules foster innovation with continuity to meet changing needs.
When used for process expansions or greenfield applications, SDe Series Control and I/O modules can be mounted on horizontal or vertical DIN-Rails. Along with mounting flexibility. DIN-Rail mounting bases, provide additional functionality including the ability to force I/O signals (based on IOC FBs), support for I/O module redundancy, HART signals (AD11e, AI12e, AO02e) local and remote sequence of events timestamping (AD11e, DI06e), and the use of only standard +24 VDC module power.
Offering a scalable compact, modular network-centric architecture, all SDe Series Control and I/O products provide for seamless interconnections with smart field, electrical devices, and advanced applications allowing for network diagnostics, redundancy and heightened connectivity. Specifically, the SDe Series features a flexible, high-performance Fast Ethernet-based plant network (PN800), and intelligent electrical and field device integration via PROFIBUS, HART, IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-104, EtherNet/IP, DNP 3.0 and Modbus TCP communication protocols.
