Global mega-trends, aligning with regional industrial transformation, have led to surging demand for data center capacity across the world.¹ In Indonesia, the world’s fourth most-populous country, where government policies have been framed to improve connectivity for its 285 million people,² that demand has driven market growth.

Data center demand has boomed in Indonesia as it undergoes a digital transformation

State-backed smart city initiatives, such as Internet of Things (IOT) technology embedded in roads, streetlights, and traffic signals will further increase the need for data centers to support growth in data consumption.³

According to recent research quoted by Microsoft, Indonesia’s data center market will be worth almost USD 4bn by 2028, as the country’s growing adoption of generative AI “unlocks USD 243.5 billion in economic production capacity.”⁴

The ‘always-on’ nature of data center demand requires ‘always-on’ power solutions – but that very demand brings with it a challenge for supply: data centres currently account for more than 1% of global electricity consumption, and as their exponential growth continues to surge⁵, sustainability of operation becomes a more urgent challenge.

In Indonesia, and globally, we’re supporting data centers with reliable, efficient and safe technologies and solutions.

Supporting power supply for AREA 31 hyperscale data centre

ABB’s UPS PowerWave 33 is installed at Area 31 Data Center & Teleport Facility

Indonesia’s AREA 31 hyperscale data centre, located approximately 30 minutes’ journey from capital Jakarta’s CBD, is one of the country’s leading facilities of its kind. It relies on our PowerWave 33 uninterruptible power supply (UPS), to guarantee continuous power availability for the network-critical infrastructure it supports.

Hyperscale data centres are defined as being large, using thousands of servers, across a large floorspace and being capable of adapting to rapidly evolving workloads. AREA 31 also serves as a conduit for satellite telecommunications.

For data centers, reliable power protection is the key to ensure uptime. This is why ABB PowerWave 33 is the perfect solution to deliver a great combination of energy efficiency and power performance.
