ABB solutions will be deployed throughout Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Global sustainable tourism development
A partnership for a greener future
Pristine beaches and cobalt seas are the stuff of any postcard-perfect holiday destination. But in an age of ‘flygskam’ (‘flight shame’) and ‘tågskryt’ (‘train brag’), resorts’ sustainability credentials have come under greater scrutiny.
Reconciling those concerns with the demand for a high-end vacation experience has led to the development of the Red Sea Project in Saudi Arabia, conceived from the outset to blend luxury with sustainability and scheudled to open in 2030.
ABB is playing a crucial role at the heart of the resort by powering an extensive electric vehicle (EV) charging network and managing its renewable energy supply. This collaboration is a testament to ABB’s commitment to forging strong partnerships that drive sustainable innovation and accelerate the transition to a low-carbon future.
The 28,000-square kilometer site, spread across an archipelago of 92 islands, is designed to run on 100 per cent renewable energy, while relying on ABB low-voltage power systems and state-of-the-art digital solutions for power management and efficiency monitoring.
A commitment to e-mobility
In addition, more than 1200 EV chargers, both AC and DC, will be installed throughout the resort, reflecting the important role of electric vehicles in promoting eco-friendly tourism. The installation will be the largest e-mobility initiative in the country and continues the progress in EV charging infrastructure made in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in recent years.
Together, these solutions will help deliver the resort as a showpiece of the economic diversification under way in the kingdom, as it transitions from reliance on oil and gas.
