Learn more about how the ABB Marine Academy H880 – Azipod® CO/DO Technical Training course can benefit your fleet with our frequently asked questions.

The Azipod® CO/DO propulsion system is part of our wider Azipod® electric propulsion portfolio. It is a gearless, steerable electric drive system housed in a pod outside the hull, capable of rotating 360 degrees for superior manoeuvrability, efficiency, and fuel savings of up to 20% compared with conventional shaftline systems.
The H880 course provides advanced knowledge of the Azipod® CO/DO system, including propulsion structure, drive control, electrical steering gear, ACS800 and ACS800LC drive functions, fault tracing, maintenance, and PC tool program exercises. It also includes theory sessions, workshop exercises, manual drills, and a factory visit.
This course is designed for marine engineers and electro‑technical personnel at operational and management level seeking deeper capability in operating and maintaining Azipod® CO/DO propulsion systems.
The ACS800 drive system is central to operating and maintaining the Azipod® CO/DO propulsion, enabling engineers to manage drive control functions and handle propulsion performance. The H880 program specifically trains participants to operate the ACS800 drive system and trace/correct basic faults, improving reliability and vessel availability.
Through a combination of theory, hands‑on PC tool exercises, and workshop demonstrations, participants gain practical experience in operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting key Azipod® CO/DO components, including the ACS800 drive system and electrical steering gear. This structured practice improves day‑to‑day operational efficiency and maintenance readiness.
Hands‑on exercises with PC diagnostic tools and demo equipment allow engineers to apply theoretical knowledge directly to real system behaviours, building troubleshooting accuracy and confidence. ABB emphasizes that such training improves safety, availability, and operational performance across the vessel.
Absolutely. The H880 program specifically teaches fault tracing methods, part and module replacement, and corrective troubleshooting techniques tailored to the Azipod® CO/DO system, including ACS800 drives. These hands‑on skills directly strengthen your ability to respond to real‑world issues on board and maintain high vessel availability.
Marine engineers should choose the H880 course when they need advanced technical understanding of Azipod® CO/DO propulsion components, including structural design, drive control, electrical steering gear, and ACS800 drive systems. This course is ideal for engineers seeking deeper maintenance and troubleshooting capability rather than operational or managerial‑level training.
Yes. Because the H880 course delivers advanced knowledge of Azipod® CO/DO systems, ACS800 operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance, it serves as a strong technical foundation for progressing into higher‑level or management‑level Azipod® training programs within ABB Marine Academy’s portfolio.
