H852 – HV SAFETY MANAGEMENT STCW – MCA/NMA/ILT
Ensure your engine and electro-technical personnel meet the necessary HV requirements for the safe and efficient operation of your fleet’s high voltage equipment and systems.
COURSE OVERVIEW
Empower your engineering and electro‑technical teams to work safely, confidently, and fully in compliance with international regulations through the ABB Marine Academy H852 – HV Safety Management (STCW – MCA/NMA/ILT Approved) course. This essential high‑voltage safety program gives crew members the knowledge and hands‑on experience they need to protect themselves, their colleagues, and your vessel’s critical electrical systems.
Built around real marine operating environments, the course helps participants understand how to recognize and control the unique risks of high‑voltage equipment—from arc‑fault dangers and switchgear hazards to the safe use of PPE and proper isolation procedures. Participants also learn how to troubleshoot and restore HV installations quickly and correctly, reducing downtime and strengthening the vessel’s overall electrical reliability.
The course has been specifically structured to satisfy the HV requirements laid out in the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW), Manila Amendments, and is approved by the UK’s Maritime & Coastguard Agency as satisfying the requirements laid out in MIN 494 (M) and Netherlands Authority (ILT).
Delivered at ABB training centers in Helsinki, Genoa, Singapore, and Rotterdam, the course makes it easy to access certified, world‑class instruction that strengthens operational safety and helps ensure your vessel remains compliant, efficient, and protected in every situation.

Learn more about how the H852 – HV Safety Management STCW – MCA/NMA/ILT can benefit your fleet with our frequently asked questions.

H852 is ABB Marine Academy’s STCW‑approved high‑voltage (HV) safety course designed to help marine engineering and electro‑technical personnel work safely, confidently, and fully in compliance with international HV standards. It meets the requirements of the STCW Manila Amendments and is approved by the UK MCA, Norwegian Maritime Authority, and Netherlands Authority (ILT).
Participants learn how to manage, troubleshoot, and safely restore marine HV systems, including:
- Applying safe working procedures and HV regulations
- Identifying and mitigating hazards such as arc faults and switchgear failures
- Selecting and using PPE correctly
- Understanding protection systems and marine electrical architectures
- Performing HV isolation, switching, and fault response
- Conducting accident analysis and preventive safety planning
These skills directly improve onboard safety, reduce risk exposure, and enhance system uptime.
High‑voltage systems power propulsion, distribution, and critical onboard equipment. Improper handling can result in severe injury, equipment damage, or vessel‑wide outages. H852 ensures crews understand how to work safely, avoid HV-related incidents, and maintain compliance with STCW and flag‑state regulations.
Yes. H852 includes interactive lectures, group work, case studies, and practical exercises, allowing trainees to practice safe HV procedures in a controlled environment before applying them onboard. This improves knowledge retention and real‑world readiness.
H852 is approved by:
- UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) – MIN 494 compliance
- Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA)
- Netherlands Authority (ILT)
- It fully satisfies HV requirements under STCW Manila Amendments
Participants must meet at least ONE of the following:
- Prior electrical or electro‑technical experience onboard
- 12 months sea time as EOOW
- Enrollment in an initial ETO training program
