AZIPOD® PROPULSION SYSTEMS
Azipod® podded propulsion systems for open water range from 1 to 22 MW and offer solutions for more than 35 vessel types. Our propulsion systems offer greater manoeuvrability, fuel and operational efficiencies, flexibility and safety compared to traditional shaftline systems. Azipod® can reduce your energy consumption by up to 20%.
For open‑water vessels, the Azipod® propulsion family includes a pulling open‑propeller configuration and a pushing ducted version. For the most challenging conditions, Azipod® high ice-class propulsion systems are a true game-changer with unparalleled icebreaking characteristics and efficiency.
AZIPOD® LOW-POWER RANGE (1-7.5 MW)
Our compact, low-power podded propulsion for open water range - Azipod® D - is the most efficient azimuthing propulsor in its power range and has excellent course-keeping characteristics. Its gear-less construction and high-performance capability provide cost-efficient, reliable and energy-saving operations for cruise, ferry, offshore and special vessels. The high performance of the thruster is achieved through its advanced hydrodynamics and by a unique hybrid cooling of the propulsion mo-tor. This combines direct cooling of surrounding sea water with an active air-cooling system. Open water Azipod® propulsion family support modest ice classes. Azipod® D is also available in pulling open propeller and pushing ducted versions with ice classes up to PC5.
AZIPOD® MID-POWER RANGE (7-12 MW)
The most efficient azimuthing propulsor in its power range, Azipod® MO also has excellent course-keeping characteristics. The gearless construction and its high-performing, cost-efficient, reliable and energy-saving properties make Azipod® MO ideal for cruise, ferry, navy and special vessels. The high performance of the propulsor is achieved by a unique hybrid cooling of the permanent magnetic propulsion motor. This combines direct cooling to surrounding sea water with an active air-cooling system. Azipod® MO is also available with ice classes up to 1A.
AZIPOD® HIGH-POWER RANGE (12-22 MW)
Azipod® XO is the most powerful azimuthing propulsor in the Azipod® family of open-water podded propulsion systems. The high-performing Azipod® XO has an electric-drive motor which negates the need for mechanical gearing. It allows for safer, more efficient operations for even the largest open-water vessels. It makes for efficient, reliable and energy-saving operations for cruise ships, high-power ferries and special vessels. Azipod® XO propulsion for open water is also available with ice classes up to 1A Super.

REASONS TO BELIEVE

Our partners recognise and benefit from our track history of excellence in innovation in propulsion for open-water vessels. With the Azipod® range, you can depend on safer, more efficient, future-ready solutions. Below are just some of the ways Azipod® azimuthing marine electric propulsion units make a difference.

Highest efficiency

Azipod® open water propulsion systems offer best-in-class efficiency on the market. Advantages include the high-torque electric motor, flexibility in adapting to vessel hull lines and unrestricted water flow to the pulling propeller. This all adds up to higher overall propulsion efficiency and accompanying fuel-cost savings.
High comfort onboard

Azipod® propulsion enhances onboard comfort by minimizing vibration and noise through its smooth, gearless electric drive. Passengers experience a quieter environment because the system’s machinery is located outside the hull. The precise manoeuvrability reduces abrupt course corrections, contributing to a more stable ride. Its efficient thrust control helps ships maintain steady motion even in challenging sea conditions. Together, these features create a noticeably calmer, more pleasant experience for everyone on board.
Exceptional manoeuvrability

Azipod® propulsion delivers exceptional manoeuvrability, allowing cruise ships to stay agile and responsive even in tight channels and busy port areas. With full 360‑degree steering capability, the system enables smooth turns and precise positioning that traditional shaft‑line setups can’t match.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

You’ll find the answers to some of the questions we are often asked about the ABB Azipod® open water range below. Our team is always available to answer any other questions you may have and offer guidance on suitable solutions for your circumstances. Please get in touch for more information.

The Azipod® open water units are used on a wide range of vessels including ferries, cruise ships, OSV, research vessels, yachts, RoPax ships, and special vessels such as heavy lift vessels.
Azipod improves efficiency by eliminating long mechanical shaftlines and gearboxes, reducing energy losses. The pulling propeller configuration ensures clean water inflow to the propeller. This maximizes hydrodynamic efficiency and lowers overall fuel consumption.
The smallest vessels in operation with Azipod® units are around 34 metres, like the Suomenlinna ferry. Azipod® propulsion is suitable for a wide range of vessel sizes up to the world’s largest cruise ships, including the ICON-series (approximately 365 metres).
A nozzle on an Azipod® system increases propeller efficiency, resulting in higher thrust, pollard pull, dymamic positioning, improved fuel economy, and reduced cavitation (the damaging bubbles that form around a propeller at high load). The nozzle directs and accelerates water flow around the propeller, generating a more optimized thrust profile. This is particularly valuable for vessels requiring high pulling power, including OSV, tugs, and workboats.
Azipod® propulsion units can be customized for each vessel design to maximize hydrodynamic performance. Thruster angle and strut height can be adjusted to ensure optimal water flow, correct propeller immersion, and efficient use of available hull space.
