GREEN BUILDINGS ARE BECOMING THE NEW STANDARD

As sustainability becomes a key priority for many of our customers, they increasingly seek guidance on how ABB technologies contribute to green building objectives and support the achievement of LEED® credits. LEED certification enables buildings to demonstrate environmental performance, reduce energy impact, and create long-term value. ABB plays a key role in this journey by providing advanced technologies that enhance control, monitoring, and operational efficiency, helping projects achieve LEED certification with confidence while delivering measurable sustainability outcomes.

HOW DOES THE LEED CERTIFICATION WORK?

LEED works by evaluating buildings based on a point system across nine categories.Projects earn points for implementing environmentally responsible strategies, and the total score determines the level of certification: Certified, Silver, Gold, or Platinum.

ABB India as ‘Pioneer in large scale adoption of Green Factory Buildings in India’

With the Green factory building approach, ABB India is further strengthening its existing environmental initiatives based on Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) & Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) requirements to make all its plants & offices more sustainable.

FAQ’S

There are four levels: Certified (40–49 points), Silver (50–59), Gold (60–79), and Platinum (80+ points). The higher the level, the greater the benefits for your building. A minimum of 40 points are required for certification.

The overall LEED certification process goes through eight main stages, see picture below, and it can take up to 18-24 months or more depending on several factors like:

 • Project complexity and scope – Larger projects take longer to document.
 • Design phase duration – Can range from 3-6 months.
 • Construction timeline – Typically 6-12 months.
 • Documentation preparation – Takes 2-4 months for thorough review.
 • GBCI review processing time – Usually 20-25 business days for preliminary review, then another 15-20 business days for final review.
 • Response time to reviewer comments – Teams typically have 25 business days to submit clarifications.
 • Number of required revisions and appeals – If supplementary information is needed, this extends the timeline.
 • Project team's efficiency – How quickly the team compiles and submits required documentation and responds to reviewer feedback.

Yes, ABB offers solutions for both new and existing buildings. Automation and energy management systems can be implemented with minimal disruption to operations.

LEED-certified buildings can reduce operational costs by 20–30%, increase property value by 3–5%, and significantly lower water and energy consumption. The typical ROI is 3–5 years.

ABB offers modular, scalable solutions that seamlessly integrate with open standards such as KNX and BACnet. These include advanced energy monitoring, automated control, and analytics platforms designed to accelerate the achievement of LEED credits.

LEED v5 BD+C raises the bar for sustainable building certification. Where LEED v4 BD+C addressed energy efficiency, water use, materials and indoor environmental quality, LEED v5 introduces mandatory requirements for carbon assessment, operational and embodied carbon planning, energy and water metering, and climate and human-resilience evaluations. Decarbonization, biodiversity and health now move from optional credits to core requirements.

The fundamental shift is one of accountability: LEED v4 asks whether a building is designed sustainably; LEED v5 demands measurable proof of lower carbon emissions, improved performance and lifecycle resilience. Both versions structure certification around prerequisites and optional credits, but LEED v5 sets a significantly higher baseline for what buildings must demonstrate.

Registration closes on 6/30/2027. Certification sunset 6/30/2038.

If the ABB products have the right documentation, for example a verified EPD, it can help the project team demonstrate compliance with relevant LEED credits, especially under Materials & Resources / Environmental Product Declarations.

EcoSolutions™ and EPDs can help translate product-level environmental information into LEED-relevant documentation, but the final LEED points always depend on the project.

The difference is easiest to understand by example:

Examples of ‘rating systems’:

 • LEED for Building Design and Construction (BD+C)
 • LEED for Operations and Maintenance (O+M)
 • LEED for Interior Design and Construction (ID+C)

Examples of rating system 'adaptations’:

 • New Construction (NC)
